Austin CCTV Surveillance Camera Technology

Camera Technology has come a long way over the past decade. CCTV Surveillance Cameras are not only smaller than ever before, they are more affordable. Image quality has gone from barely visible, to more than you could ever wish to see. We have gone from VCR tape-based CCTV Surveillance Solutions to Digital Video Recorders that can now be networked and viewed from any mobile device.

Austin CCTV Surveillance Image Sensors

CMOS Image sensor

CMOS Cameras are relatively inexpensive to produce and have a small footprint. These sensors can be used with very little extra electronic components and are affordable, but usually have problems with contrast and color.

1/4 Inch CCD Image Sensor

1/4″ CCD image sensors are the next step up from CMOS. CCD is short for Charge Couple Devices. They require slightly more electronic components to build, so they cost slightly more. CCD Sensors offer more accurate color-capture while maintaining great contrast.

1/3 Inch CCD Image Sensor

1/3 Inch CCD Image Sensors have all the great features and benefits of the 1/4 inch sensors, but with higher capture capabilities. These image sensors are capable of reaching 700TVL of resolution.

Austin Wireless Camera Systems

Although wireless technology is constantly improving, there are many things to consider when choosing between wired or wireless camera systems. The benefits of selecting wireless systems are the low cost of installation, having no visible wires, and ease of movement. While wireless cameras cost more, the cost of installation is usually less. The disadvantages of using wireless cameras is that they are suceptible to interference. They can also interfere with other wireless networks such as computers. In addition, because wireless systems require electricity to operate, they still maintain the need for particular wires to be installed.

One of the latest trends with home security locks is the use of keyless entry systems. Traditionally, these keyless locks were only used with commercial building security but are now finding popularity in the residential security sector. The primary reason for this is the numerous advantages of using keyless entry systems (keypad door locks).

First, keypad door locks do not use any keys. The homeowner enters in their secret code on the numbered keypad and are able to lock and unlock their doors. Homeowners enjoy the freedom of not having to worry about they are their loved ones losing their keys and being locked out of their home. This is practical, for having to keep up with a number of keys can be a hassle. With keypad door locks, homeowners never have to worry about being denied access to their residence.

The second advantage to the keyless entry lock system is the extra security that keypad locks provide for families. You don’t have to worry about keys being stolen or locks being opened by intruders. Criminals will have to know the access number in order to open the door. The secret numbered code can also be changed relatively easily if one feels the number has been given to an unauthorized user by a family member. Also, unlike keys that can be duplicated by criminals to gain entry into your home, keypad locks are extremely difficult to copy. Only the keypad manufacturer can duplicate your individual lock. This allows homeowners to have peace of mind when using these locks because they know that they can count on them to provide security when they need it most.

Thirdly, one of the newest advantages with keypad locks is that most models can be integrated with the home’s alarm system. With more and more people getting security alarm systems, the homeowner is able to utilize additional features with their keyless entry system such as remotely locking or unlocking the door.

At Fortress Lock, Safe, and Security, we offer homeowners and businesses keyless entry systems along with a variety of the latest and best security-related devices. Austin’s most comprehensive security company, Fortress can assist with surveillance cameras, alarm systems, motion detectors, safes and safe repairs, etc. Visit us online at www.FortressLockAndSecurity.com or call us at (512)800-3030 to discuss how we can assist you in protecting your home or business.

Safes are designed to protect your valuables. The two biggest threats are burglary and fire. Today Fortress Lock, Safe, & Security, Austin’s premier safe company has some tips to help you chose the best safe for your needs.

Lets start by asking a few questions.

1. Do i need a security safe to protect against fire?
2. Do i need a security safe to protect against burglary?
3. Will i ever need to access the safe in a hurry?
4. Do i need the ability to deposit into the safe without a code or key?
5. How much am i willing to spend on a safe?
6. How important is the quality of the safe?

Keep your answers in mind as we discuss the different types of safes, the pros and cons, and the typical applications.

Burglary Security Safes

A burglary safe is designed to slow down a burglar attempt, but may or may not provide fire protection. Many safes that are marketed as burglary safes provide little or no real burglary protection. Many times an unskilled criminal can access the safe with nothing more then a crowbar and a hammer in under 5 minutes.

Things to look for in a burglary safe.

1. Metal Construction. Quality burglary safes begin with a 1/4 to up several inches of solid hardened steel. Many safes such as Sentry sell burglar safes with plastic bodies, or thin metal wells less than a 1/8 of an Inch. Always be sure to consider barrier material and thickness. Also consider the quantity and size of locking bolts.

2. Re-locker. Re-lockers are what make burglary safes safe. Without a re-locker a burglary can knock the dial off with a hammer and smash the spindle in and the safe will open just as if you had the correct combination. Re-lockers are spring loaded locking bolts that are held in place by glass or metal plates. During a burglary attempt the plate will move or break firing the internal re-lockers and protecting the valuables from the burglar. Most safes under $500 have no re-locker!

3. Hard Plate. Hard-plate materials resist drilling and punching which protects vulnerable areas. All safes have vulnerable points. An experienced burglar or safe cracker can take advantage of these vulnerable points to open a safe quickly and easily. A hard plate will prevent drilling or punching without specialized equipment and lots of time.

Burglary Safe Ratings

Common Burglary Safe Ratings are as follows: unrated, B rated, C Rated, TL-15, TL-30.

Unrated – Needs no explanation

B-Rate Safe – 1/4″ thick steel body, 1/2″ thick steel Door

C-Rate Safe – 1/2″ thick steel body, 1″ thick steel door

Ul Tl-15 – at Least 1″ thick body with minimum tensile strength of 50,000 P.S.I (Tested to withstand torch and tool attacks on the door by professional safe crackers for 15 minutes)

Ul Tl-30 – at Least 1″ thick body with minimum tensile strength of 50,000 P.S.I (Tested to withstand torch and tool attacks on the door by professional safe crackers for 30 minutes)

UL TL-30X6 – Sames standards as TL-30 Safes except testing is done on all six sides not just the door.

Fire Safes

Fire safes are rated by the amount of time they can spend in a fire while protecting your valuables. Fire safe may or may not also have a burglary rating.

1 or 1/2 Hours UL rating – Class 125 Class 250 – Maintain an interior temperature less than 125F or 150F and an interior relative humidity less than 85% for class 150 or 80% for class 125, when exposed to fire as per the Standard Time Temperature Curve for hours to 1700F. Successfully undergo all other requirements for the Fire Endurance Test, the Explosion Hazard Test, the Humidity Test, and the Fire & Impact Test (separately or combined). Basically, no explosion through 30 minutes of exposure to a 2000F fire, an immediate 30 foot drop test, and a standard reheating for 30 minutes to 1550F.

2 Hours UL rating- Class 350 – Maintain and interior temperature less than 350F when exposed to a fire as per the Standard Time Temperature Curve for 2 hours to 1850F. Successfully undergo all other requirements for the Fire Endurance Test, the Explosion Hazard Test, and the Fire and Impact Test (separately or combined). Basically no explosion through 30 minutes of exposure to a 2000F fire, 15 minutes of standard exposure to 1638F, and immediate 30 foot drop test and a Standard reheating for 45 minutes to 1638F.

Mercury Class I	- Exposed to 1200F for 45 minutes and maintained an inside temperature of less than 350F

Depository Safes

Depository safes offer the connivence of not having to have a combination holder present when someone needs to put something in the safe. This is ideal for restraints and businesses where cashiers must deposit into the safe but don’t have the authority to remove money from the safe. Depository safes often don’t have fire ratings due their elaborate deposit slots.

Safecracking

There is nothing new about safecracking. It’s been around as long as safes have. This post is not meant to be a definitive history of safecracking, nor a “how to”. It is merely meant to give a general understanding of the profession to the public. Safe cracking or safe opening is primarily the concern of thieves, and locksmiths. Thieves are concerned with it for the obvious reasons, but you may ask why is a locksmith concerned with safe cracking?Well, there are a number of legitimate reasons that a safe needs to be cracked. They include but are not limited to: lost combinations, safe lock malfunctions, fires, and burglary attempts. Regardless of the reason a safe needs to be opened, we are going to shed some light on a few of the methods of safe opening, or safecracking.

Safecracking Methods

Disclaimer: We are not going to disclose any sensitive information that would make safe owners vulnerable. We are merely going over the methods of safe opening that are commonly used by burglars and professional safe technicians.

Prying Open a Safe

This is the oldest, most common, and yet least effective method of attack when attempting to gain entry to a safe. In my experience, this is the most common method of burglary attempts. Most prying attempts don’t even come close to gaining access to a quality safe. However, when it does work, it is as simple as prying the door and the bolt work out of the door frame. Given enough strength, energy, and time, any safe could eventually be pried into, but rarely does a burglar have the time.

Cutting Into a Safe

Cutting, whether by torch or saw, into a safe is probably the most utilized method for professional criminals. In rare instances it is also a method that professional safe technicians use. While it is a sure fire way to get into a safe, it takes lots and lots of time, makes lots of noise, and is a huge mess. Many modern high security safes have a composite barrier which includes a layer of copper plate that dissipates the heat of a torch to slow down the attack. There are also many safes which employ a layer of tar in the barrier of the safe to fill the room with smoke during a torch attack. Likewise many high security safes use a combination of different materials in the barrier of the safe that will dull a saw blade in a matter of seconds, making cutting an expensive, noisy, messing, time consuming experience.

Safe Manipulation

Safe manipulation is the process of discovering the safes combination through the sound or touch of the safe during certain processes. Due to manufacturing tolerances and variations many safe locks will give a very discreet sound or physical resistance when the safe wheels are being dialed a certain way. This method requires an intimate knowledge of the lock being manipulated, patience, and experience so it is only used by the most seasoned and experienced professional safecrackers. Safe technicians will commonly use stethoscopes to amplify the subtle sounds of the lock to aid in the process, as is commonly shown in movies. Most mechanical safe locks are susceptible to this attack, and while there are a handful of world renowned safe manipulators that can accomplish the task in a couple of minutes, it takes most professionals an hour or more. This is the most respected safecracking method ever because it is leaves no trace, and leaves the safe in perfect working condition and in no need of repairs.

Drilling a Safe

Drilling a safe is another method that is common among professional safe technicians. When the safe is equipped with electronic locks or manipulation resistant locks, drilling may be the most practical method of entry. It also requires an intimate knowledge of the lock and safe being opened. The idea is to place a tiny hole that would allow the safe to be opened through the use of a precision instrument though the hole, or so that the hole can be used to visually obtain knowledge leading to correctly dialing a mechanical safe open. While this may sound simple, there are many complications. Most high security safes employ “hard plates” or barrier materials that that will eat an entire box of drill bits in no time. Specialty drill rigs, drill bits, and drilling methods are required to breach these hard plates and barriers, and again, an intimate knowledge of the lock and container are required. Another common obstacle to drilling is a device called a “glass re-locker”. Many safe employ a sheet of glass behind the hard place that has many spring loaded re-locking bars attached to it by cable. When the drill bit strikes the glass plate it shatters allowing the re-lockers to shoot out into strategic positions blocking the bolt work of the safe and locking it down 10 times more then it was in its normal locked condition. A rare but also used defensive method is a tear gas canister that is triggered by a drilling or punching attack which then emits tear gas through the drilled or punched hole. Talk about a bad day! A drilling attempt by an untrained burglar or an undertrained locksmith often end in catastrophe. Drilling is a common practical commercial method of opening safes because simple repairs can be made to restore the container and lock to their original conditions or better allowing the safe to be put back into service, whereas cutting or prying would completely destroy the safe. Many times the hole drilled can be placed under the dial or dial ring so that when a new lock is installed there is no visible evidence that the safe had been drilled.

Scoping a Safe

Scoping a safe is the process of drilling a hole and inserting an expensive specialized borescope into the hole to get an intimate look into a specific part of the security container. When manipulation proof mechanical locks, and glass re-lockers are implemented as security measures scoping is the most practical option. One common method is called “scoping the change key hole.” When using this method, the safecracker will drill a hole allowing him to get his scope into a position to observe the change key hole. While spinning the dial and looking through the change key hole for certain landmarks on the combination locks wheel pack, it is possible to obtain the combination and then dial open the safe normally. This method is a choice method for professional safe specialist because it leaves the lock in good working order and only simple repairs are needed to bring the safe barrier back to its original condition. Criminals seldom use techniques like this because of the expensive tools and intimate knowledge required of the locking systems.

Summary

These Safe Cracking Methods are only a brief survey of methods used to open safes without a combination. Lost or unknown combinations are not the only reason that safes need to be cracked. Many times it is due to a lock malfunction or a botched burglar attack. We did not discuss those situations due to the wide variety of lock specific failures and methods. We simply seek to illuminate the process of safecracking for those that are curious about the profession. At Fortress Lock, Safe, & Security we take pride in our work and love what we do. If you have a specific safecracking need in and around Austin, TX we can be reached at 512-800-3030 .

Unfortunately, this problem is all too common. Sentry, the most well known safe manufacturer in the world, has produced some of the most economical and widely available home and office security safes. Because they are so common, we get a great deal of phone calls from customers that cannot open their Sentry safe. Some of the phone calls are due to the customer losing their combination, but many times the customer has the combination, but the safe is malfunctioning. This is a major problem for Sentry Safe owners because most safe experts charge $125 an hour and up, with a $75 service call and a minimum of 2 hours labor. The only thing more frustrating then being locked out of your own safe is having to pay 5 times the cost of the safe to get back into it. On the other hand, there are many “fly-by-night” locksmith services that will charge you a $15 service call and several hundreds of dollars to open your safe with a hammer and a grinder, leaving your valuables destroyed and your safe inoperable.

We at Fortress Lock, Safe, & Security are proud to announce that we are now offering affordable pricing for opening Sentry Safes . Whether you’ve lost the combination, or the lock has malfunctioned, we can open and repair most Sentry safes. Because we are factory trained and experienced, we can afford to do it at a reasonable price. And best of all, most Sentry safes can be opened without any damage to the safe. We employ methods of opening such as manipulation and scoping that do not harm the lock mechanism and leave the safe in good working order. Call us today at 512-800-3030 for more information.

Turn the dial right until it stops, at approximately 95. If the dial does not stop, carefully repeat the entire opening procedure. Remember to dial exactly to the number of the combination with which you are working. Dialing even a small amount past a number you meant to stop on will cause the lock to remain locked. This is part of the mechanism’s security.

To re-lock the combination lock, turn the dial four complete revolutions to any non-combination number.
